Saved

The Atakapa was in the process of converting from a "spy" ship back to a "salvage" ship. I was the first Salvage Diver to report on board, later, Diver Mike Stasko an Ohio buckeye joined me. It was like Christmas opening packages of brand-new dive equipment; Hard Hats, Jack Brown mask, and Scuba gear. I had uncrated our air compressor which was used to refill our twin aluminum scuba tanks, and filled the empty crank case with engine oil, filled the gas tank and then proceeded to pull on the cord a couple of times trying to get it started. Just then CWO2 Tom Williams came up and as he walked by ask if I had put any oil in the compressor and kept walking. I think he had been watching me from somewhere and knew I put oil in the engine but not the compressor. Anyone else would have made a big scene to say the least however, Mr. Williams didn't. He saved a new air compressor from being ruined and a very greatfull Bubble head from disciplinary action.
Thanks Mr. Williams!
